The Breakfast Nook: One Room Challenge Reveal!

The past seven weeks went by in a flash. Moments of quiet and slow with my paintbrush merged with the fast lane of getting everything finished on time. As usual, I was tapping the walls with a touch-up brush and fussing with the decor until the last second. Now that it is finally reveal day, I feel very proud of this little breakfast nook. Much like my gymnast daughter, it is small but mighty.

As I mentioned before, when BHH was built in the 1880s, the breakfast nook was either an open or screened-in delivery porch. Circa 1950, based on my discovery of old drywall, someone enclosed the porch, and the beautiful arched windows became the jewel of Blake Hill House, inside and out.

Before

Since there is no after without a before, let’s take a quick peek back. Prior to starting the challenge in earnest, the breakfast room née delivery porch was not accessible from the kitchen. The door was sealed shut with nails and a variety of weather stripping. Years of neglect were evident in the chipped and stained, sage green paint. (Note: My comment about neglect is not intended to be negative towards Dorothy. I have said it before, and I will repeat it, Dorothy did a remarkable job keeping up with this big old house considering that she lived here alone for many years.)

All along, the plan was to get rid of the green, but I took a little heat on social media for changing the color. Sage is a much more popular color than I expected.

That feedback got in my head, and I struggled with committing to a paint color scheme. However, once I put that issue of form behind me, everything fell into place. I began to imagine the Breakfast Nook as if it were a very fancy treehouse with a funky little coffee shop inside.

After

I get giddy showing this part. Seriously, if you were here in person, I would be bouncing up a down and clapping my hands just a little.

This shot was taken Tuesday after I finished every last bit of construction. What a clean slate!

And voila! Treehouse Coffee Shop:

Crazy different, right?

Let’s look a little closer at the fancy floor. The plywood is stenciled, stained, and sealed with polyurethane. Also, I added baseboards and proper shoe molding around the perimeter.

The window on the back wall used to be on the exterior of BHH before the porch enclosure. After I restored the original hardware, I added privacy film to block the view of the laundry room opposite this wall. The Cavallini Dandelion print and the blue ceiling add a punch of color to the room.

In my world, a decor project is not complete without plants and accessories inspired by nature.

Feather Plates

Deer Hook / Sleigh Bells

Yes, that’s my owl.

These little vintage school chairs are my favorite. They traveled all over BHH before landing here in the Breakfast Nook. I do not doubt that these chairs lived an exciting life in education before I plucked them out of a local antique shop.

Even though it is narrow, the bar can accommodate full-size dishes. I made this simple table out of leftover maple plywood. (A tutorial is coming soon!) The corbels dress it up just a bit. After all, even though our family is all about being casual, BHH is a little fancy.

Coffee Mug / Dog Placemats (Home Goods) / Pottery Bowl (vintage)

Seven weeks later, we are delighted to have an informal place to eat directly off the kitchen.

Thank you for encouraging me throughout these past few weeks. I wanted to quit that table about four times, and it took me 13 1/2  hours to stencil the floor. The One Room Challenge™ inspires, motivates, exasperates, and yes, challenges me every. single. time.

Next week, I will be back with the budget breakdown + my favorite ORC projects and a tutorial for stenciling a floor.

Today, I will end with a few more of my favorite shots of our treehouse, coffee shop, breakfast nook. Come on over. I did not make the scones, but they are fresh, and the coffee will be hot.

Now, it is time to head on over to Calling It Home to see all the reveals from the Featured Designers and the other Guest Participants too. Many thanks to Linda, founder of the One Room Challenge™, and media partners, House Beautiful and Home Love Network. It has been a delight.

I cannot wait to see all of the other project reveals. Before I do, I am taking a long nap.

Start from the beginning:

I totally approve of the white walls, and in fact was thinking about how ironic it is that I was 100% on board with the white walls when you didn’t like the first color. ?

Even with all the peeks these last few days, the final reveal is still a wonderful surprise. The dining room, the library, and now the nook–you have a definite style that is warm, cozy, and inviting. Like a hug. The table, floor, views = 5-star establishment. Love this so much. The before and after, just amazing! Enjoy many hours there. And keep those pics and clips coming. I want to see more. Good job!

It looks fantastic! I like the idea that everyone has a view. Love the vintage chairs, and the floor turned out wonderfully!

Not sorry to see the green go, but curiously, I discovered Green Smoke from Farrow & Ball a few days ago as we were looking for something lighter than our original planned Narraganset Green (BM) for our Parlor. The image of the sage green reminded me of the Green Smoke as I was scrolling down. I am discovering an appreciation for green I never knew I had….. But definitely not the the degree in which Dorothy loved green.

Have you seen the blog Old Brand New? Dabito painted the fence in his ORC project Calke Green by F&B, and it is beautiful. Old Brand New is a featured designer of the ORC. One of these days I want to try F&B paint to see what all the fuss is about. I want nothing less than angels singing when I open the can for the first time. 😀

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Green used to be my favorite color until I moved to BHH. As we tone it down a bit around here, I find myself being drawn to green again. I just needed a little break.

Truly fabulous!! The windows are so amazing to begin with and I love the little nooks that make old houses so charming. I love a good painted floor and being a Lowcountry Charleston gal I think all porches should have light blue ceilings. I believe it so much that not only my porch but my upstairs bathrooms have light blue ceilings 🙂 You are going to enjoy that breakfast nook so much!

Whoooooa, Stacy! This project ended up even better than I expected! Can’t believe you surprised us with that floor. Great photos and styling, too – that’s the hardest part of blogging for me (I don’t like stuff that feels styled to the point it’s totally unrealistic/impractical).

One suggestion: can the Treehouse Coffee Shop host a pop-up cocktail bar sometime? Because I’d love to have an overpriced drink in that very chic space.

Thank you so much, Marti! I appreciate your comments about the styling too. It’s not my gift, but I am trying to learn. I thought about trying to balance an egg on a candlestick, setting on a cloth napkin, nestled in a bowl atop a plate atop a charger, but that seemed like too much. 😀

And yes, this Treehouse Coffee Shop is open for cocktails. We may be overpriced, but I will offer a heavy pour. Come on over.

Might I recommend the movie “Cold Comfort Farm”, based on the book by Stella Gibbons? The main character visits a tea room where she eats sugared oranges with a tiny spoon and I just adore the idea. It’s the funniest movie ever, AND Kate Beckinsale’s costumes are SO AMAZING in a really understated, English, 1920’s kinda way. I’m just imagining sitting in your tea room in a smart tweed suit LOL.

Oh my gosh, Stacy, I LOVE it! Those vintage school chairs, the stencilled floor, the decorative accents, the blue ceiling – I love it all. What a beautiful space to sip your morning coffee!

What an adorable breakfast nook, Stacy! Changing the paint color was definitely a wise idea. How cool are those floors?! What a lovely revamped space. Congrats on a job well done!

Oh my gosh! This turned out beautiful! I love the black windows! They provide a crisp clean element and the pattern on the floor gives the perfect visual interest! Well done 😉

Omg that floor looks just as incredible as your inspiration photo! What an amazing transformation!
There is definitely a place for simple white walls, and they really are perfect here. Everything has come together so so nicely. I bet that it will be so lovely to have a cup of coffee in there in the morning while watching the snow fall.
