The Guest Bedroom – Ready for an Update

We are in that sweet spot between projects where we should just sit back with our feet up and enjoy it, but that really isn’t our method of operation. In three weeks, we will join in the One Room Challenge™ with a doozy of a project that I cannot wait to share with you. I know I have been pretty cagey about the room we are redoing for the challenge. I own that. Honestly, I was not sure we could make it happen. I am still a little nervous about it, but we are just going to go for it. I am nothing if not optimistic.

Three weeks is too short for a large project, but it is just right for a Guest Bedroom Refresh. This poor room has seen its share of problems. When we first moved into the house it looked like this:

The wallpaper was in near-new condition, but the flower pattern was a little overwhelming. The bed looked so sad and lonely all by itself. I set the bed up right before my sister came to visit. This look says, “You may stay the night, but then you must be on your way.” I knew we could do better.

The winter after that photo was taken BHH had terrible ice dams. The aftermath was a thing of nightmares. I still get anxious when we have too many days in a row below freezing.

In the guest room, the paper peeled away from underneath the windows. We quickly realized that the ice dam damage was not a one-time incident. The wall underneath the windows was liberally patched and badly damaged.

The repair was straightforward, but it took time. We removed all of the wallpaper in preparation for painting. The walls underneath were a disaster.

In June of 2015, a week before our son’s friend from California arrived, I was still patching walls. I was also due to head out of town and arrive home the day before our visitor.  I suggested that we just apologize to A’s friend, but leave the walls as-is. Andy had other ideas. While I was away, he chose a paint color and finished the room. #controlfreaknightmare

When I asked him how he chose the color (gulp), he said, and I quote, “I walked into the paint store right before they closed. I looked at the paint chips, saw a color that looked like the color of my bedroom when I was a kid, and I chose it. I was in and out of the store in less than ten minutes.”

Alrighty then.

Don’t get me wrong; I am so thankful that he jumped on the task of painting. We just look at decorating differently. I look at it, and he does not. Ha!

Over the past two years, we added another twin bed, a small rug, an old dresser, and little else.

Clearly, my apathy with this room has influenced the decor.

It is the first room visible at the top of the stairs.

Natural light pours in for most of the day, and there is so much character in this room. Just look at these windows!

This room has a warm and friendly feel. It is going to be beautiful when it is done.

My inspiration for the guest bedroom in BHH is Bedroom #6 from Jenna Sue’s cottage flip project. I love everything about it.

The first step is repainting, and I will have an update for you next week.

I might cry if you paint that bright, colorful bedroom white! ??

I’m just kidding. Though I will say I admire Andy’s decisiveness. On the occasions that I involve Phil in the color selection process, it is a tedious, drawn out affair that involved many steps between the paint chip displays in the paint store. I rarely involve him as a result, and frequently point out his assertion when we moved in that I could do whatever I wanted (he’s regretting that with my current black wall obsession – it’s gonna happen).

Anyway, I love those windows, and can’t wait to see what you do with the house. And I’m intrigued about the ORC!

      You aren’t kidding. 🙂 You’d cry. LOL

Yeah, okay, I’d probably cry LOL

(A friend recently painted their bright red room taupe. I was traumatized and stayed off FB all the rest of that day, while reminding myself over and over that not everyone wants to live in a rainbow hahahaha)

That seriously had me laughing out loud…. I think some men do all their shopping like that, in and out in 10 minutes…. I cant wait to see the finished room, love the inspiration picture!

We have very different opinions on just how warm, cozy and comfortable a guest room should be.

Ha ha! I’m going for something in between “Stay a day” and “Stay a week.”

And for the record, when I asked if the paint store was about to close, the kind gentleman said, “We are closing in 10 minutes.”

To which I replied, “That’s okay. I only need five.”

Yeah, that color selection process would be funnier if it weren’t so familiar 😉 At least Andy had a good reason for that blue, and not because it was the paint chip closest to the entry door. Looking forward to this next ORC project. Your dining room ORC is still one of my favorites–refreshed with original charm.

I don’t know; it could have also been the closest to the door. 😀 I am so glad that you like the dining room. It feels good to have it done.

I am pretty much in charge of all paint color decisions at our house. My husband once asked me to knit him a “navy green” sweater. Yeah, some color perception challenges there!
